Where is AI on the Hype Cycle?

At Fidra Analytics, we are nothing but excited about AI’s prospects for revolutionising the world and how it operates; though we are, of course, keenly aware of the wider industry debate on where AI and GenAI are currently falling on the Hype Cycle.

What is the ‘Hype Cycle’?

The term ‘Hype Cycle’, coined by Gartner in the 1990s, helps to map out and visualise the peaks and troughs of excitement around different technologies. Artificial Intelligence has taken the world by storm, and in recent years the tech decidedly steamed ahead to the “peak of inflated expectations”. The beginning of 2024 saw that initial excitement begin to wane, and now we are hearing that the general hype has tracked back down towards the “trough of disillusionment”.

Trough of Disillusionment

This “trough” occurs when early adoption of the tech doesn’t entirely meet expectations, or there are reports of significant performance issues. Put crudely, there was a broader realisation that our imaginations, with their self-driving cars and AI servant robots, were working faster than our coders could.

That said, the “trough of disillusionment” is not inherently a bad place to be, because it precedes much safer, more regulated and realistic progress. Once out of the trough, the tech enters the “slope of enlightenment”, where early adopters begin to see actual benefit. As the technology matures it does deliver on promises, and those promises are growing more complex each day.

Are we reaching realistic progress?

In the wider Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics community, there is significant debate on whether AI tech has entered the “slope of enlightenment” phase yet or not. The team at Fidra Analytics feel strongly that the “slope of enlightenment” is underway, as we have delivered a multitude of concrete AI solutions that are streamlining business operations, right now.

Working across various sectors, we have enhanced software products, streamlined customer service teams, and crafted unique RAG based solutions that significantly trim down information retrieval time. We have published case studies on some of our projects and more in the works, if you’d like to know the details of an implemented AI product read some of our case studies here.

We also understand that AI curiosity is often bridled by wariness, and that sometimes just reading success stories doesn’t help. If you or your company are heading to the Big Data London event, 18-19 September, visit the Fidra Analytics stand Y552 to see AI solutions in action and pose questions to some of our engineering team behind them.
